Claim an account

The U.S. Treasury has automatically opened Trump Accounts for most eligible children. However, you must still claim your child’s account to make contributions and manage investments.

Does my child already have an account?

You can find out if the U.S. Treasury has already opened an account for your child by beginning the claiming process through the Trump Accounts app or on the Trump Accounts web portal.

If an account has not been opened automatically by the U.S. Treasury, a parent or guardian can elect to open one by filing IRS Form 4547. The preferred way to do this is through the IRS online account for individuals (also known as IOLA), where the form can be completed electronically. Alternatively, Form 4547 can also be submitted.

Eligibility for a Trump Account is based on age and having a Social Security Number. If your child meets those criteria, the U.S. Treasury may have already opened a Trump Account for them, without you having done anything.

What happens after the Treasury opens the account?

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's agent holds and administers the account as Trustee on the government's behalf. No one has access to the account, including its balance or history, until a parent or guardian claims it. If funds are already in the account, they're invested from day one, so once you claim the account, the balance you see may be higher or lower than the exact amount deposited. That reflects normal market movement, not an error.

How do I claim my child’s Trump Account?

You'll need to go through the account claiming process in the Trump Accounts app or on the Trump Accounts web portal. As part of claiming, you'll need to verify your identity. This step confirms you're who you say you are before you're given access to your child's account. You'll be asked a few additional questions to confirm your legal authority to claim the account, such as your relationship to the child as their parent or legal guardian. This establishes that you're the appropriate person to take on the Responsible Party role.

Once you've completed the claim process, you'll have full management access to the account. This includes seeing the account's full history, such as any contributions or activity that happened before you claimed it, managing future contributions, and receiving statements and tax documents going forward.

If you're stuck at any point, contact our support team for help. Some delays are a normal part of the process, such as waiting for the information that you provided to be matched to your child's record. If you run into an issue we can't resolve directly, we'll make sure it gets to the right team for review rather than leave you without an answer.

Claim accounts for additional children

After you’ve claimed a Trump Account for one of your children, you can add more children by selecting Add child at the top of the account switcher in the Trump Accounts app, and follow the on-screen steps to add them. You’ll be able to view and manage all your children’s Trump Accounts from one location in the app, using the same login credentials.

What if I didn’t finish the steps to claim the account?

If you started the account claiming process but didn't complete it, your progress is saved and you can pick up where you left off. Simply sign back in with the username and password you created, and you'll be prompted to complete the remaining claiming steps.

Can I opt out?

Account creation itself happens automatically and can’t be opted out of. Once a Trump Account has been claimed, it cannot be closed regardless of how the account was created.

What if the account isn't claimed?

There's no deadline to claim the account. It stays open, and any funds in it remain invested, whether or not it's been claimed. When your child turns 18, it converts into a traditional IRA in their name. Your child then becomes the owner and will need to verify their identity to take control directly, with no parent or Responsible Party managing the account. The funds aren't lost or returned; they stay in the account.

Does automatic enrollment include the $1,000 Pilot Program Contribution if my child is eligible?

No. If the U.S. Treasury automatically opened an account for your child, you must still separately elect for your eligible child to receive the $1,000 Pilot Program Contribution.

The Treasury opening a Trump Account and electing to receive the $1,000 Pilot Program Contribution are two separate processes. The Treasury may open a Trump Account for your child regardless of whether your child is eligible for the pilot contribution. To receive the $1,000 Pilot Program Contribution, an authorized individual must make a separate election for an eligible child. Children are eligible for the pilot contribution if they are U.S. citizens born on or after January 1, 2025, and on or before December 31, 2028.

Additional questions

Is this a scam? Someone told me my child already has money waiting.

If you're unsure whether a communication is legitimate, visit TrumpAccounts.gov or use the Trump Accounts app instead of responding directly to a message.

Real Trump Account notices only come from trumpaccount.com, the official app, or an email from trumpaccounts.treasury.gov.

My co-parent and I are separated. Can they claim the account before I do?

Yes. Whichever eligible adult completes the claim process first is granted control of the account. It's handled on a first-come basis.

I claimed my child's account, but the balance doesn't match what I expected.

Your child's funds are invested as soon as they're received, so the balance moves with the market from day one. It's normal for the balance to be higher or lower than the original contribution amount. That reflects the market, not a mistake on the account.

Will I get statements or tax documents for the period before I claimed?

Yes. Once you claim the account, you'll have access to statements covering its full activity, including anything that happened before you claimed it. Tax documents follow the same standard timing as any other Trump Account.

Does this affect financial aid or benefits calculations before I claim?

There's nothing to evaluate until the account is claimed. Once claimed, a tax or financial aid professional would be the right resource to assess impact for your situation.

What is my child's money invested in before I claim it, and can I change it?

All funds, whether claimed or not, are invested in the same index fund, currently SPYM, which tracks the S&P 500. There isn't a way to choose a different investment option for any Trump Account at this time. Additional investments are expected to be offered in claimed accounts at a later date.

What are the rules for a specific donor gift or grant?

Each donor program sets its own eligibility rules. You can check eligibility criteria even if the account hasn't been claimed yet, since eligibility depends on your child's circumstances, not on account status.
